Nipple Reconstruction

Nipple reconstruction is typically performed in our office under local anesthesia once your breast gland reconstruction is complete. If there are incisions healing around the proposed nipple site, these incisions need to heal for at least 6 weeks prior to undergoing nipple reconstruction. The desired nipple-areola position is determined on your current reconstructed breast mound and three flaps are mobilized to create a nipple. It is necessary to create a projected nipple and to protect the nipple over the first 2 weeks of healing because the projection decreases by approximately 50% during the healing process.
